Esfand (Persian: اسفند) — also known as wild rue, Syrian rue, or by its scientific name Peganum harmala — is a sacred plant widely used across the Middle East and Central Asia for spiritual cleansing and protection.

A Traditional Cleansing Ritual. When burned, the small brown seeds release a strong, earthy, smoky aroma.

This practice, known as “dodane esfand” (دود کردن اسفند), is believed to ward off the evil eye, jealousy, and negative energy.

Esfand is commonly burned:

After celebrations or weddings

When someone receives a lot of praise

To welcome guests into a home

Anytime protection or cleansing is desired

The Seven Circles:

In many households, the burning esfand is gently spun around a person’s head seven times — a symbolic gesture meant to draw out negativity and invite safety, clarity, and blessings.

A Traditional Blessing:

During the ritual, it’s common to say:

“Esfand, esfand, be-bar cheshm-e bad ro door kon!”

(اسفند، اسفند، ببر چشم بد رو دور کن!)

“Esfand, esfand, take away the evil eye!”
